As newly empty nesters we now realize how important it was that we dated, flirted and acted like husband and wife WHILE we raised our children. We followed the 2-2-2 rule that we read about after we married and while we raised our kids ... and now we see how much it blessed us.

Our 2-2-2 rule was a date every two weeks, go somewhere overnight without the kids 2 times a year, and once every 2 years we take a long trip together (multiple nights) without kids. Now we look back and we realized it blessed us as empty nesters.

There is a spike in the divorce rate at empty nest, but not for couples who did "husband and wife" things while they raised their children. Generally the spike in the divorce rate at empty nest happens to couples who put their marriage on the back burner while they raised their children. Their children were their main priority. They didn't date, take trips, flirt, be affectionate and sexual intimacy wasn't a priority. They hit empty nest and it is hard to start all those things they hadn't been doing while they raised their children.

Now, we see how it blessed us to regularly prioritize our marriage. And, our children, who are all now grown and married often mention how thankful they are that they saw us not only being "mom and dad" but also being "husband and wife." They’ve mentioned many times they understand now how to do marriage themselves from watching us.
