All Couples - Part 2

Part 2: But, You Do Have an Enemy

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. — Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

We live in a love story in the midst of a war. — John Eldredge

If our sin nature is gone, then where does the sin come from? John Eldredge reminds us, “Why does every story have a villain? Because yours does.”

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but in case you were not aware, there is someone who literally hates you and everything you stand for. He hates you and he hates your marriage. There is a thief that comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Your enemy prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

Read that again. Devour. Not give a paper cut to. Not maim. Not even cut limb from limb. Devour. You and your marriage have an enemy and he will give everything he has to see that you don’t make it.

There is so much we could say here, so much we would like to teach, but for the sake of brevity we’ll just say this:

Prayer is your biggest weapon in this ongoing war with your enemy. Put on the armor of God. Quite literally dress yourself with it. Ask God to show you how He sees your spouse. Pray for and with each other. There is nothing more intimate in this life than a husband and wife praying together.

Remember Matthew 18:19-20: “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
